The massey fashion show was a massive success, hosting some of Wellington's freshest designers. Lucy McIntosh was a designer in particular who stood out for me. I'm already a sucker for tailored shirts, so her collection ticked all the boxes for me. It was wearable, professional and also very powerful on the catwalk, and with great attention to detailing in the cuffs and linings.

Ok... so its been a while, and I've been neglecting my posts. What better way to return then with the very talented Hermione Flynn. Her latest collection "Still Life" exudes professionalism and individuality. 'The professors cape' has to be my favourite garment with its simplistic geometry and lush tailoring. All her products are made from 100% natural materials in New Zealand.
Definitely have to keep an eye on this one.

Fashion Designer Sophie Burrowes, 19yrs, has already managed to produce 2 collections! I greatly admire her ability to juggle both her own collections along with University study! We were lucky enough to have a chat with Sophie about her recent success and plans for the future.

What made you decide to become a fashion designer?
When I was about 12 my sister got a sewing machine as a present one year and I became super jealous so after she got sick of it and had made one pencil case and 1 dress I pretty much took it. Since then I always knew I wanted to either be fashion designer or in the industry.

What inspires your collections?

Lots of things! At the moment I'm quite inspired by military themes and the whole gladiator, warrior trend that's going on. I get really inspired by fabrics and going fabric shopping. Also although I don't wear much pink myself I always find myself drawn to it, I think I like to just create pretty things that people will want to wear.

I've pretty much taken over my mums office in our house, that along with Massey University but mainly 'mums' office.

What kind of things do you collect?

Unfortunately things to do with garments. Buttons, Trims, Ribbons, Sequins, Beads. All of that stuff. I love finding clearance deals on all of those things and buy them and then use them like 2 years later.

What is your favourite part of creating a collection?

Getting to wear it all myself!

Are you surprised at how far you have come with your designs?

Yea absolutely, Red11 have been a huge support for me and they're always really positive. I'm also surprised by how much social media can help a young business grow through word of mouth advertising.

Where do you see yourself in 5years?

Hopefully still doing the label except in a really nice large light studio! With lots of helpers!

Recently we spoke with badass illustrator and fashion designer Valentin Ozich. His illustrations are detached, rough and punk-esk. We wanted to know where he draws his inspiration from and whether the style of his illustration influences the brand ethos.

What's the concept behind the name "I love Ugly"?
I Love Ugly is pretty much a representation of who I am. I see beauty in ugly and thats what I try to glamourise in the work which I do. At first I didn't mean for it to become what its become, but unintentionally it still fits and works. To be honest I am not the best person in the world at explaining what my label means conceptually, instead I try to create something that evokes thought and for who ever owns it to create there own meaning so to speak.

What drew you to fashion initially? Was it something you were always interested in?
I have always been into fashion. But in saying that, not exactly high fashion, but more so clothes and style in general. I have been buying clothes since I have had the money to do so. I am an illustrator, and I feel that alot of art these days can be overpriced. So I basically wanted to create accessible and cool art, so what better way to do that then put it on a t shirt?

What kind of things do you collect?
All my life I have been a collector as well as an appreciator of all sorts of shit. At the moment im a collector of vintage snap back caps, interesting figurines, artist prints, and weird stuff from $2 shops, for example miniature wooden clothing pegs, toy trains that you can make to spell weird words and stuff like that.

What are 5 NON-fashion orientated influences on your designs?
Pretty much the majority of my influences are non fashion, but here they are:
1/ music
2/ cool home interior
3/ films
4/ vinyl art
5/ marijuana

How much does your illustration cross over into fashion?
My illustration is what pretty much stemmed I Love Ugly. Through out each range there is a heavy element of illustration. The prints I create have always been a strong point for the label, and is what people recognise the most I believe, without plastering the name of my brand all over the garment. But now however, I am really getting into the garment design of things. I have always had a problem with the obsession of attention to detail and now that along with my illustration is reflective in the design of my garments. I am now trying to creative pieces which have these weird interesting elements going on without physically drawing on the garment.

Have you ever been surprised by where your work has taken you creatively, and in what way?
Yea most definitely. Even though I studied graphic design, I knew by the 2nd year of my degree that I wasn't going to be a traditional graphic designer. Instead I really pushed the illustration thing and the cross over with that and traditional graphic design created some really interesting stuff. I always had this weird 'fuck you all' thing going on and people kind of liked it. When I started to get commissioned to do work for the likes of MTV and Adidas Originals, I was like 'yea, finally people are starting to understand what im doing'.

What are some of the ideas behind your Winter 2010 collection?
Well to be honest, I have just quit my job because I Love Ugly was getting to the point now where I couldnt do that as well as hold down a full time job. This collection was basically showing people to now take the label seriously as this is my full time gig now. I got the range together relatively quick but am happy with the outcome of it. Its called 'Evils Little Helper'. The reason being is I feel my label is something different to other stuff around me, and has this evil little twist to it. Man, I'm not making sense, as I said before "I'm not good at explaining my ideas verbally" Sorry.

Why did you decide to use balaclavas in your most recent lookbook?
I used these because they relate to the name of the range. Also balaclavas have that "criminal" aesthetic associated with them and instead of having the pretty models just standing in front of the camera, it adds a bit of spice to the shoot and brings out the character of the label.

Where do you see the brand in the next 5 years?
Hopefully I can still be making a living off it. I have been now for the last 5 weeks so hopefully that can stretch on for another 5 years. I really want to make a presence in the overseas market. After doing a lot of buying for my own boutique I have realised that New Zealand designers are right up there and definitely some of the best clothing designers in the world.

Kelly Thompson has impressed and inspired many with her beautiful illustration and photography skills. Her illustrations capture the natural sexiness of beautiful women, and will attract any observer. Her style is expressed through various mediums, and spans from photography to illustration, and everything in between. I had a chat with her about the past influences, present ambitions and how she sees her work in the future. Enjoy!

When did you start drawing?

My first memory was when I was a child and my grandfather taught me how to draw 3D square houses, I have been going ever since!

Which is your favorite work so far?

Its always the newest one, but I guess my all time favourite is Lilli, I love her.

What things have recently inspired you?

A great model I shot called Siannon Pallister, shes heaps of fun and I have drawn her a few times now. I'm also getting a little bit inspired by clutter so I think my next batch of pics will have a lot less negative space!

What kind of things do you collect and why?

I don't collect anything at the moment because I am planning to move overseas so its all about the cull! Although my wardrobe is almost reaching collector status eeek.

Since 2005, can you remember the most influential moment from each year?

Do you want things that influenced me or most exciting things? I might be bad at this I'm super shit at placing happenings with years haha.

How do you know when one of your works is finished?

Its kinda hard to explain I just keep going and as soon as its done I just know, its a feeling.

How did you get into fashion photography?

I did a Bachelor of Design and majored in photography so as soon as I finished I just harassed everyone I knew ( and didn't know) to try and get some work, I basically just bombarded everyone until a magazine gave me a chance and it all went from there.

What are the 3 most fun things about being a fashion photographer?

1/ Playing around with fun creative teams

2/ Every shoot being different

3/ Seeing the final layup and thinking "Yay"

Where do you see yourself in ten years time?

Hopefully with an established reputation and recognised as a successful NZ artist.

Have you ever been surprised by where your work has taken you creatively? And in what way?

I guess to some extent I have been surprised more about who knows about my work, Its amazing to think that someone in a country Ive never been to can know so much about my work. I think creatively it can take me much further and there are still many ideas I am yet to use for jobs

How would you describe your art to a complete stranger?

Its always quite hard for me because I don't want it to sound dirty but I don't want to say its portraiture.. I usually say that it is feminine and based around fashionable females looking flirty, then they raise their eyebrows and I cant tell if they think I'm a crazy artist or if they're into it.

You are also an art teacher. How has this influenced your career as an artist?

I tutor illustration at Massey for four hours a week. At the moment I'm tutoring final year illustration students and its very inspiring for me. I think if anything tutoring makes you realise how much you actually know and I think a lot of the time while I am tutoring I am also learning a lot about myself. Its also very interesting to see how other creatives work , their processes , their styles and their opinions, if anything it challenges me to work harder.

How do you handle the business side of being an artist?

I employ someone to do all my taxes because I admit I'm a failure at it! I also have an agent International Rescue so they deal with all my quoting for jobs etc etc. I also joined the AIPA which has been very helpful for information.

Is the re-branding turning point on your business? Has it changed as a result of a change in your self expression?

Yes, to some extent the re-branding is a turning point for me. I think that my current branding on my website and cards etc doesn't reflect where I am anymore and I want to move on to something a little more refined, and I guess grown up. I think the current branding is possibly a little young and girly, and I want it to appeal to a wider range of viewers ....I also hate pink.
